The one thing I wont tolerate …

Bill took issue with my use of the word "LUCKY". I'm not going to get into my beliefs ... luck, fate, evolution vs creation etc. I will say that Bill made a good point and I could have chosen a better word. Read More »

Firefighters Go Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Across the Nation

Across the Nation, Firefighters are wearing pink for breast cancer awareness. Wearing pink may not seem like a big deal to the public, changing from the normal department issued uniform T-shirt or polo rarely happens. When I say rarely...this is the first time in my 12 years at my department that I have worn anything but my navy blue t-shirt or class A or B uniform. It is commendable that Fire Chiefs have realized the good of the campaigns and allowed firefighters to wear pink. Read More »

I cried ….

I know ...I know ... I'm a fireman. Well guess what ??? Firemen are HUMAN ... we have feelings and emotion. Most of the time, we are able to set them aside, to hide them from our friends, family and the public. I haven't been doing such a good job of tha… Read More »

Why am I even here?

I've asked myself that question thousands of times since the attacks on our Nation back in 2001. My dad, Rhett (The FireCritic), Todd "Boots" Harris and myself recently sat down for an interview with Roanoke Times reporter Jorge Valencia. It was a GREAT … Read More »

Fire, EMS, and Police Bloggers are Becoming Spokespersons for Products and Services

Sure, having busty tall blonde booth babes works very well too. But that typically just gets guys to stop and stare for a little while. Having a personality that many people know prior to the show in your booth can be an even bigger draw. Plus, what do those booth babes know about your product? You probably gave them a 5 minute crash course on your product and expect them to be experts. Once they leave the show they aren't going to write about the fun they had, the people they met, publish pictures from your booth, or any of that. Read More »

MN8 Products Foxfire Illuminating All-In-One Coating Kit Product Review

All in all, I think this product is great! The application is not the easiest, but the end result is awesome. I have found this application to be the brightest of all of the products. The durablility of the product has been great. We did apply it to a hydrant wrench that sits on the tailboard of the engine. It wasn't the best application and gets beat up a good bit. However, you won't have to worry about not seeing it if it is sitting in tall grass next to the hydrant at night! Read More »

Too big for their britches

What’s in Your Pockets? Here is What’s in Mine

Occasionally I will place other tools in my pockets to give them a try and see if they are something I forget on the engine or need frequently. Most of the time, I go back to the way it has been for years. I keep two sets of webbing, each secured in a loop with a caribeener or two for rescue, self-rescue, or a downed firefighter. I also carry the 25' prussick just in case I need to take a dive out of a window without the advantage of having a ladder (although I have no plans of needing this!)....you just never know!
