Taking “Brotherhood” to the FDNY and so much more… 3rd and final part!

A photographer captured and unbelievable shot of James, at attention, hand on the bell, a tear on his cheek and the American flag in the foreground. I can't describe the emotion I felt seeing the photo ... or the emotion it captured. Read More »

FDNY BABY ! FIRE CRITIC, DAVE STATTER AND IRONFIREMEN.COM VISIT NEW YORK

It's the hardest thing I've ever done yet somewhere deep down, somewhere deep down in your soul and out of that stairwell, you find the strength the keep climbing. It transforms you. I was in that stairwell climbing but I was also somewhere far away. Sweating, out of breath and burning with pain yet at peace. Read More »

A HUGE “LET DOWN”

Our strategies and tactics must change and adapt to the environments in which we are placed. I'm not so sure that our training methods and text books shouldn't be changed as well. I mean we may as well be teaching single firefighter techniques right? Why teach and drill into a rookies head the "team concept" when in reality, they are gonna end up on the nozzle or searching alone? Read More »

RE-ADJUSTING

Rhett, Zach Green and I have just returned from a trip up to New York City. Much like most of the journeys Rhett and I embark on ( ie; 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs, NFFF Memorial Weekends, etc), this trip was life altering. I find myself back home and even on duty today but so far from the person who left Roanoke a mere 5 days ago. Read More »

The Free Taxi Ride

Years ago I was working with New York City as an EMT out of Queens General Hospital. I remember being in shock after picking up an otherwise non-ill appearing man who gave a complaint that I currently cannot recall. We took him in a city ambulance to the local hospital. The part that shocked me was that he never entered the hospital. He thanked us and proceeded to go across the street to do his shopping. He never was sick and never intended to enter the ED doors. We served as free transportation for him. Read More »

EMS After 911: The State of Prehospital Care

It seems as if the overall system for Emergency Medical Care is in need of reinvention. A centrally controlled scene command, an assurance of minimal skill and proficiency for EMTs and first responders, and an ability of hospitals to have a built in cushion to absorb patients, are all core components of an effective disaster preparedness system. This reinvention must be realized on a state or regional level. Failure to address these issues could prove disastrous in the future if such circumstances ever reoccurred Read More »

A 2:15AM Presser

We all know the feeling of getting the page in the wee hours to respond to an incident that requires the attention of the public information office. The attempted car bombing that took place in Times Square in NYC on Saturday evening is one such type of incident where the spit second coordination of internal and external information to and from many departments is required.
